I recently visited Doha and, given my keen interest in public transport, I couldn’t resist trying out their Metro and bus systems.
As seen in the video, Doha’s Metro is modern, clean, spacious, and punctual – designed with aesthetics, ergonomics, and future expansion in mind. On top of that, ticket prices were incredibly affordable—just 6 Qatari Riyals (or about £1.35/$1.65) for unlimited daily travel!
This level of efficiency and affordability feels worlds apart from the challenges faced by public transport users in many cities worldwide.
But, what can we learn from mega-rich Doha, I hear you ask? So yes, unlike many cities, Doha didn’t have to navigate legacy infrastructure or significant budget constraints. But that’s not the key takeaway. What truly sets Doha apart is its clear, long-term vision—one that isn’t just a collection of vague statements that allow for compromises later but is backed by a well-defined strategy for execution.
That’s not to say we should wait indefinitely for a strategy to emerge before taking action. However, every intervention should align with a long-term strategy—one that evolves over time while maintaining a clear direction.
At Innovatious, we’ve worked with clients to develop forward-thinking transport strategies, some of which consider societal, technological, and workplace changes over a 30-year horizon. If you’re looking to shape a more effective public transport system, get in touch—we’d love to help.
