Innovatious played a key role in Phase 2 of the Rail Delivery Group’s (RDG) cEMV standards project, which aims to enable contactless payment card acceptance on British rail services. This phase focused on defining the necessary architecture and processes for integrating RDG services with regional contactless payment systems.
Our work included:
- Defining journey types and analysing front-office device integration options: We explored the 4 key customer journey scenarios and documented technical options for integrating fare gates and validators with back-office systems, emphasizing the need for a common interface standard.
- Developing interface specifications and analysing back-office integration options: We created an initial specification for a common rail front-office device interface and documented the architectures of regional back-office systems, outlining the requirements for RDG service integration.
- Defining customer propositions, operating models, and revenue inspection approaches: We defined potential customer propositions that would support each of the journey types, outlined a high-level target operating model, and documented various revenue inspection approaches, including their pros and cons.
- Analysing impacts on RDG solutions: We conducted a detailed analysis of the functional impact of integrating with different back-office architectures on RDG solutions in development.
This comprehensive analysis provided RDG with critical insights and a framework for implementing interoperable contactless payment solutions across the British rail network.
