Case Study

DfT – Future of Smart Ticketing Study.

The Project

The Client

The Department for Transport (DfT) is a UK government department responsible for the English transport network, responsible for strategic planning, investment in transport infrastructure projects and developing transport policies and regulations.

Project Description

Innovatious, partnered with Atkins, undertook a comprehensive study to explore and analyze the feasibility of multi-operator, multi-modal Account Based Ticketing (ABT) in the UK. This involved documenting potential solution options, drawing on existing UK and international schemes, as well as our own expertise in the supplier market. We evaluated these options based on criteria such as technical complexity, cost, customer proposition, and commercial feasibility.

Furthermore, we identified key technical, operational, and commercial challenges associated with implementing multi-operator, multi-modal ticketing within the UK’s devolved landscape. Based on our findings, we provided practical recommendations to the Department for Transport (DfT), including potential fare policy changes and the establishment of industry standards to facilitate ABT development.

Finally, we explored the concept of Mobility as a Service (MaaS), outlining its key functionalities and the necessary enhancements to existing ticketing solutions for successful MaaS integration. This included a conceptual MaaS solution architecture, highlighting key components, functions, and interfaces.
